2000 Coaching Awards

AYF Football Coach of The Year 2000

Tony Truscello has been named American Youth Football Coach of the Year for 2000. Tony coaches the Wallkill youth football team of thirteen-year olds. AYF cannot say enough about this deserving individual. He is one of the founding members of AYF dedication to our national program has been outstanding. All of his wins in football are only secondary to his devotion to the children in his program. He is also the program director with the Wallkill organization and his interest is always what will benefit all of the children.

Tony has coached all levels of football from hih school on down to the youth level for the past twenty years. He finds the youth level to be the most rewarding and making a difference in youth lives. His policy has always been for his assistant coaches to find at least one positive thing to say about each player in the course of practices. He not only teaches the fundamentals of football, but also stresses Sportsmanship and Class. His opponents are always impressed with the professional way his teams conduct themselves on the field.

Tony Truscello has proven what a winner really is and it is reflected in his fine record and the attitudes of his players. We could probably go on and on about Tony's qualities as a coach, but, as he would probably say, "I owe it all to the kids." American Youth Football is proud to honor Tony Truscello as our Coach of the Year.

Jeff Hathaway, football coach of the Bridgeport, West Virginia Little Indians, was the runner up for Football Coach of the Year Honors. We appreciate his hard work with the Little Indians, especially with their outstanding scholars. Jeff, we hope you will have another successful season in 2001 and take a crack at the top honors.

AYF Cheerleader Coach of The Year 2000

Shelley Mitchell has been named American Youth Football Cheerleader Coach of the Year for 2000. Shelley coaches in the Mountaineer Conference of West Virginia. She coaches the Barbour County Mustangs. Shelley's cheer squad won first place at the American Youth Football Cheer Competition at Orlando, Florida. Shelley grew up with the Mustang organization and cheered on through high school for a total of nine years.

In addition to coaching, Shelley is a student and is active in her church. She teaches Sunday School and is the Youth Coordinator, where she organizes activities throughout the year for the youth. Shelley has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology and is a graduate student at West Virginia University and by now, has a Masters in Elementary Education. Shelley! Congratulations as our Cheerleader Coach of the Year! You honor us!

AYF Volunteer of The Year 2000

Lori Luthe, of the Cherry Hill, New Jersey Midget Football League, wins American Youth Football's very first Volunteer of the Year award. Lori has been very active in the Cherry Hill program and she does about everything except coach football. "I'll do anything kids will benefit from," she said. "I feel it is an important part of my life."

During the football season, she spends all day at the concession stand from 9:00am to 8:00pm. She not only cleans the kitchen, but the bathrooms as well. She helps out with the CHMFL's banquet and helped raise $10,000 for the program. She is also a Den Mom in the Cub Scouts and a Brownie Troop Leader. She serves as a vice president for the School PTA and is on the Board of Education. She is also active in Little League Baseball. One of her favorite hobbies (we don't know where she gets the time) is Jet Skiing. Lori, American Youth Football salutes you as our first Volunteer of the Year!
