(AYF) - Mr. President, The AYF Family congratulates you on your re-election. Over the next four years issues seem daunting; the economic recovery, foreign policy, environmental control and health care. However, despite these important policy decisions you undoubtedly will face, I want to bring something else to your attention.
Our youth, this nations greatest natural resource, are at risk. The streets of our cities have gangs shooting each other at an alarming rate. Kids are faced with growing health care issues. Physical activity levels have dropped 32 percent in less than two generations. We need to focus more on education and cultivate a sense of pride by recognizing youth achievement in academics, athletics, and the arts. No child should feel helpless. In many cases helpless has turned to HOPELESS. Without hope a child can be influenced against anyone and anything and developing this self-esteem is a vital key to improving education in schools across America. If we team up as parents and leaders we can teach kids to overcome any self-imposed limitations.
If you want a good example of true community and parental leadership and support for its youth, take the eastern US Coast line where Hurricane Sandy ravaged communities. I just returned from visiting New Jersey and I became a stronger and more dedicated leader for it. I saw grown men cry while showing me the destruction of their homes. I heard the stories of weeks of darkness with only neighbors to comfort and feed each other. Yet, in the midst of all of the darkness, I saw parents somehow finding a way to get their children to the cheer competition and football fields. They said, "we have our family and that matter most.” In an effort to bring back some sense of normalcy these parents supported their most valued possession (their kids). These are not victims they are HERO'S!
You cannot control what happens - you can only control how you react to what happens. "Restore the Shore" is what I heard time after time from these parents and volunteers. Their hearts cannot go unnoticed.
Mr. President, I know you’re a basketball fan. Basketball is great but the team is limited in numbers while football has twenty-two players a kicker and a punter. Football is almost 5x as effective at getting kids off the couch and active. Please understand I am not asking for you to support the NFL, with their well paid players or the college football system which by the way will make even more money with the new playoff system. What I suggest is you lend your support to the youth cheer and football leaders that make up our great country. They know how to stretch a dollar, organize entire communities, and keep their kids healthy and productive.
The American Youth Football family is ready to hear from you Mr. President. Let’s work together to make our youth our number one priority on and off the field.
Thank You.
